We strongly discourage anything but block Arabic numerals. The address must be clearly and easily readable from the street fronting the property, and should also be visible from any alley or similar roadway behind the property.

Every building has the potential to need emergency responders someday, be it the police, fire service or emergency medical services. The address is necessary to direct these folks to the right location, and for them to find it.
It can be done, but again, we discourage this because black numbers become invisible when the glass also appears black, and backgrounds also tend to disguise or hide the numbers.
This is somewhat dependent on how big the building is and how far from the street it is. We feel that a minimum height of 4 inches is justified. On large buildings, numerals as large as 12 inches, or even greater are sometimes needed.
The only problem with this is that garage doors are often left open. The address posting must be on a surface that is always going to be visible.
The only thing we insist on is that the color of the numerals must be in sharp contrast with the background upon which they are mounted. And if you paint your home, remember to freshen the color on the numbers. Don’t forget to replace the numbers if removed for any reason.
